Great theater can evoke a host of emotions. A new play making its North American premiere in Chicago is attempting to make audiences feel something that’s not as common in the theater world … fear.
Chicago Shakespeare Theater is presenting PARANORMAL ACTIVITY, a new theater work inspired by the popular film franchise. If you’re unfamiliar, the first PARANORMAL ACTIVITY film came out in the fall of 2009 and quickly became a giant box office hit. The movie (which utilizes a found footage aesthetic) tells the story of a young couple dealing with a supernatural presence. The film ended up earning nearly $108 million at the U.S. box office and another $85 million abroad. The success of that first film created a PARANORMAL ACTIVITY franchise with six sequels. And now a new theatrical production inspired by the PARANORMAL ACITIVTY universe is set to open in Chicago and then tour several cities. It’s not an adaptation of the films … but a new story in the PARANORMAL ACTIVITY world. Chicago-based playwright Levi Holloway is responsible for co-creating the new piece.
