"Forgotten" Schapiro Jazz Photos Shine In New book
WDCB’s Gary Zidek has the story behind a new photo book filled with hundreds of rarely seen pictures of jazz legends taken by renowned photographer Steve Schapiro.

Recognized as one of America's most accomplished documentary photographers, Steve Schapiro had a remarkable career that spanned more than six decades. Renowned for his ability to tell powerful stories through intimate images Schapiro created an enduring visual record of the civil rights movement, American politics, Hollywood and everyday life. A new book is illuminating an early part of his career that most people don’t know about. Schapiro spent two years in the early 60s taking pictures of some of the biggest names in jazz.
Schapiro passed away in 2022 at the age of 87, leaving behind a legacy of images that continue to inspire viewers all over the world. But few knew about his jazz pictures. Candid photos, like the one below of Sonny Rollins lifting weights, fill the 300-plus page coffee table book.
