Joe Swanberg Gets Personal In New Rom-Com

A woman is torn between two lovers in the new indie film THE SUN NEVER SETS. It comes from acclaimed filmmaker Joe Swanberg. He wrote and directed the new movie, which stars Dakota Fanning, Jake Johnson and Corey Michael Smith.

Set in Alaska, Fanning plays a young woman, Wendy, who is in a long-term relationship with Jack (Johnson), an older man who has two children from a previous marriage. Jack has made it clear he’s not interested in getting married or having more kids and suggests the couple take a summer break from each other so Wendy can have some time for herself to think about what she wants. Wendy objects, but begrudgingly goes along with the plan. She ends up reconnecting with her old boyfriend, Chuck (Smith) and there’s instant chemistry. As you might imagine Jack isn’t thrilled with this development, Wendy finds herself conflicted and a love triangle with no real villains develops.

THE SUN NEVER SETS represents a return of sorts for Swanberg, who has taken a break from directing feature films in recent years. Swanberg had a prolific stretch between 2007 and 2017. Now, he’s back with a highly personal project that’s loosely inspired by some his own experiences.
