“The shortest term that you can condense this down to is its, Spotify for libraries. So, we’re out looking for local artists, musicians who write original music and we’re basically building a collection, that’s going to feature (local) music, streaming.” - Poplar Creek Public Library studio services assistant Jonathan Golko describing the new SOUNDWAVE project.

A suburban library is launching a new project that aims to assist local musicians and potentially foster a new type of music community. The Streamwood-based Poplar Creek Poplar Creek Library calls the program, SOUNDWAVE. The initiative utilizes a digital platform called MUSICat, that allows libraries to set-up their own locally-focused streaming libraries. The platform, which was developed by the Wisconsin-based company Rabble, is currently being used by over a dozen libraries all over North American. The Poplar Creek Library is the first Illinois library to implement the program. And now it’s putting out the call to local musicians to submit their original music. If selected, musicians will receive a one-time monetary honorarium and their music will be included in the digital Soundwave Music Library, accessible for all to listen to.
