Early Music Ensembles Come Together For Rare Program
WDCB’s Gary Zidek caught up with The Newberry Consort's Liza Malamut & Bella Voce's Andrew Lewis to talk about a new collaboration involving rarely performed music.
Rarely performed pieces of 17th century music will be given new life in a pair of local performances coming up this month. The concerts are the result of a first of its kind collaboration between two of Chicago’s prominent early music ensembles, The Newberry Consort and Bella Voce. While both organizations have operated in the same musical stratosphere for over 35 years, they had never worked on a project together. That changed with the idea of performing an ambitious, but rarely attempted, program made up of German late-Renaissance composer Michael Praetorius’ music. The program is titled Singen und Sagen: Music for Hope in a Time of War, which translates to “sing and say”. The amount of musicians and singers needed to perform these 17th century works means they’re rarely presented in the United States.
