“South Side Suite represents the musical experience of me growing up on the south side of Chicago.” - Thurman Barker talking about his newest work, SOUTH SIDE SUITE.
Chicago native Thurman Barker has been exploring music in its various forms for over five decades. The percussionist has seemingly done it all during his career: he’s gigged at some of the finest jazz clubs, played alongside superstars like Marvin Gaye & Bette Midler, performed in the pit for national touring theatrical productions and he helped start the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. Chicago, specifically his time on the south side, is the inspiration for a new long-form piece that he’ll be performing at the Museum of Contemporary Art on Friday August 30.
