“I realized in my first year it was a great responsibility, presenting jazz and keeping it alive. Already at that time I could see how the jazz stations, the places that I had been able to listen to jazz while I was in Chicagoland, had shrunk and they were continuing to shrink, so I knew it was important if jazz was going to live we needed an outlet. And I take that as a very seriously responsibility and always have, and still to this day, it’s very important.” - Barry Winograd talking about his approach to presenting jazz on the radio.

If you’re a Chicago-based jazz fan chances are you’re familiar with the soothing voice of Barry Winograd. The Evanston native has been presenting jazz on Chicago-area radio stations for 40 years. Later this month, Winograd will retire from the mid-day shift he’s held at WDCB for the past 18 years.

Winograd won’t be going too far away, he’ll continue hosting his Saturday morning program, WHEN JAZZ WAS KING (10am -11am) and he’ll still be playing saxophone all over the Chicago-area.

WDCB will celebrate Winograd Tuesday September 10 at The Jazz Showcase. The free event will feature the Eric Schneider Quintet and other special guests. You can find more information here.
