“I would hope that this story says it’s time to make a shift, to create a space in which you can, as Lauren says, listen, learn, discover, open yourself and be willing to create a safe space where people can just be themselves.” - EVERYBODY’S TALKING ABOUT JAMIE director Jonathan Butterell talking about what he hopes audiences take away.

The new film EVERYBODY’S TALKING ABOUT JAMIE tells the story of teenager who wants express himself unapologetically. The movie is an adaptation of the award-winning musical that won over audiences on London’s west end a few years ago. And that stage production was inspired by the real life story of Jamie Campbell. Around 10 years ago, Campbell’s efforts to dress in drag for his Sheffield England high school prom were highlighted in a BBC3 documentary. British theater artist Jonathan Butterell saw the documentary, and Campbell’s story could make for a compelling musical stage production. Eventually, Butterell collaborated with Dan Gillespie Sells and Tom MacRae to create a musical production of EVERYBODY’S TALKING ABOUT JAMIE. It opened in Sheffield and then won over audiences in London. The production’s success led to movie deal, and a decade after the original BBC 3 documentary about Jamie Campbell aired, a film adaptation of that story opened in cinemas.

The film centers around Jamie and the people who care about him. Jamie deals with bullying on a regular basis, he doesn’t feel the need to hide his homosexuality. But things change a bit when Jamie makes it known he plans to dress in drag for his high school prom. Jamie is brought to life on screen by newcomer, Max Harwood. This is the 23-year-old’s first professional acting job ever. Harwood says he hopes viewers find inspiration in the film.
