Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel FRANKENSTEIN has been the source material for countless adaptations over the years. The gothic tale has inspired numerous films, plays, comic books and even a ballet. In 2016, London’s Royal Ballet presented a world premiere choreographed by the late Liam Scarlett. That adaptation has made it’s way to Chicago, the Joffrey Ballet is kicking off its 68th season this week with a production of Scarlett’s FRANKENSTEIN. While there’s definitely some darkness, the ballet leans closer to Shelley’s novel than any of the film adaptations many people might be more familiar with.
