The world of classical music has traditionally been focused on men. There are signs that orchestras are paying more attention to gender equality … though change is gradual.
Finnish-Ukrainian conductor Dalia Stasevska is part of a growing wave of women conductors who are taking their place at the podium, leading some of the world’s finest orchestras. Stasevska is the chief conductor for the Lahti Symphony Orchestra in Finland and the Principal guest conductor for the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Stasevska recently made her Chicago Symphony Orchestra debut. She says there’s been a definite shift in recent years, with more orchestras reaching out. However, the past 12 months have been bittersweet as Stasevska continues to work to raise funds and awareness of the situation in Ukraine, the country where she was born and her father grew up.
