WDCB's Gary Zidek pays tribute to Chicago jazz impresario Joe Segal.

“What Joe did was he spread it out to the listeners, he showed them what was good, what was cool, he taught them to listen in many ways. So, he was able to share his knowledge and his love of the music, and his knowledge and love were beyond category as Ellington would have said, and he was the father of it all.” - Barry Winograd talking about Joe Segal’s efforts to support and promote jazz in Chicago.

Inside the Jazz Showcase

Inside the Jazz Showcase

Chicago’s jazz community lost a true legend this month. Jazz Showcase founder Joe Segal passed away at the age of 94. While Segal wasn’t a musician, his love and support of the art form helped make Chicago one of the country’s premiere jazz cities. Born in Philadelphia, Segal’s lifelong passion for jazz started at a young age. After a stint in the army he enrolled at Roosevelt University and began presenting jazz concerts in the late 40’s and continued doing it for the next seven decades.

Joe Segal passed at away at the age of 94 Monday August 10th. He’ll be missed.
