A new book is offering a fun history lesson on some of Chicago’s oldest, still standing pieces of history. The book, titled OLDEST CHICAGO, dives into the stories behind the city’s oldest landmarks, buildings and businesses. Curious about Chicago’s oldest hot dog stand? Wondering where the city’s oldest church is? Ever thought to yourself, I wonder where’s the oldest place in Chicago I can still get a drink? Author David Witter has done an extensive amount of research into Chicago’s history to find those still standing links to the past.
The book highlights some hidden gems, like Marge’s Still in the Old Town neighborhood, which is technically the city’s oldest, still-operating bar.
There’s also lots of information on some not-so hidden gems that have remarkable histories, many Chicagoans may not be familiar with. Three businesses (Green Mill, Margie’s Candies & Central Camera) with iconic neon signs are among the oldest businesses profiled in the book.
Chicago’s oldest nightclub, the Green Mill
Chicago’s oldest ice cream parlor and candy shop, Margie’s Candies
Chicago’s oldest camera store, Central Camera
