WDCB's Gary Zidek talks to artist Jeremiah Hulsebos-Spofford about his new sculptural installation, GARDEN GIPSOTECA.
“I think some of the work is thinking a little about that idea of the vernacular of garden sculpture, sort of neo-classical works that started in a grand temple or museum somewhere, but then they make their way into peoples’ back yards and homes. I’m interested in thinking about, what’s high art? What’s low art? What’s art for a broader public?” - Jeremiah Hulsebos-Spofford talking about the inspiration for GARDEN GIPSOTECA.
Thanks to advancements in technology and new resources, grand artworks that were once considered unattainable, are now accessible to everyone in one form or another. Chicago-based artist Jeremiah Hulsebos Spofford is exploring ideas around copy and reproduction in a new commission currently on display in The Arts Club of Chicago garden space.
Hulsebos-Spofford’s GARDEN GIPSOTECA is the latest commission in The Arts Club of Chicago’s Garden Projects series. The sculptures are on display in an outdoor area on St. Clair Street (near Ontario). which means they’re available for public viewing 24 hours a day.
People walking by the Arts Club will be able to see Hulsebos-Spofford’s eight-foot tall HERCULES sculpture (above) and a piece (below) inspired by the Mr. Coffee coffeemaker in the movie APOLLO 13.
