“My vision for this project is what I think the rest of my life’s mission is going to be, and that is supporting Black women and girls, using art as a way of healing.” - Theater Artist Sydney Chatman talking about the Joyce Award-supported project she’s about to start at Congo Square Theatre.

We’re not even halfway through 2021 and it’s already been a year to remember for Chicago theater artist Sydney Chatman. The writer-director-educator recently received two major awards that will aid in her efforts to not only create new art, but also meaningful change.
Chatman was recently announced as a recipient of a 2021 Joyce Award, an annual program dedicated to supporting artists of color in the Great Lakes region. She plans to use the $75,000 award to develop an ambitious community-based healing theater project that she’ll work on with Congo Square Theatre.
