WDCB's Gary Zidek catches up with author Colin Dickey to talk about his new book THE UNIDENTIFIED.

“I wanted to understand how these beliefs and desires kinda of got rooted in our subconsciousness, and how they evolved over the years to get to where we are today. So, I went as far back as the 19th century to understand the moment in which some of these fringe beliefs really took hold.” - Author Colin Dickey talking about his inspiration for writing THE UNIDENTIFIED.

A new book from author Colin Dickey delves into America’s fascination with the unexplained. It’s called THE UNIDENTIFIED: MYTHICAL MONSTERS, ALIEN ENCOUNTERS AND OUR OBSESSION WITH THE UNEXPLAINED. The book explores those fringe stories and myths that we’ve all heard as well as some lesser-known tales, tracing their origins to show how some of these accounts of the unexplained started and then spread.

What we think of when talking about a UFO … a flying saucer

What we think of when talking about a UFO … a flying saucer

Ever wonder where the first flying saucer story came from? Dickey writes about it in his book. Kenneth Arnold  was an American aviator known for making what is generally considered the first widely reported unidentified flying object in the U.S. in 1947. He tells a reporter in Washington state that he saw “bat-winged” aircrafts that flew like saucers skipping across the water. A story about flying saucers begins to spread. And today, flying saucers are the image most people have when talking about UFOs.
