A Chicago-based philanthropic non-profit is continuing its efforts to support underrepresented artists in the Great Lakes region. This summer, the Joyce Foundation is awarding a total of $375,000 that will be split among five artists. The Joyce Awards started in 2004, since then the Foundation has funded 82 new artistic projects and collaborations in six Midwest cities.
This year’s crop of awardees includes three Chicago-based projects including one that will be created by artist Regina Agu, who will be working with the Museum of Contemporary Photography. That project titled SHORE/LINES will involve the creation of a large scale installation and field guide that will dive into the history of Black Midwestern lakeside communities.
