Chicago-area theaters have dealt with a lot in 2020. Their seasons came to an abrupt end in mid-March as COVID-19 cases ramped up across the country. Confronted with a sudden shutdown, local theater companies adapted and pivoted to new ways of presenting work. There hasn’t been one approach to navigating the situation, theater organizations have approached the pandemic in different ways. Many companies shifted content to the virtual realm, some of have created new work, and others have focused on repurposing older pieces.
Without a doubt, 2020 will be remembered as the year of COVID, but some other monumental things occurred during the year. In late May, the murder of George Floyd sent a tidal wave throughout the world. And some reverberations were definitely felt in the local theater scene.
