Film Review: ANNETTE
WDCB’s Gary Zidek reviews the new film, ANNETTE.
The new film ANNETTE is an avant-garde rock opera that comes from the minds of Ron and Russel Mael, the brothers that make up the pop duo SPARKS. We don’t see too many avant-garde rock operas get theatrical releases and Amazon backing, but this one stands out because it stars two legitimate A-list talents. Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard play star-crossed lovers and the quality of their respective performances really give the film a sense of legitimacy. Though their efforts aren’t enough to save a film that’s bursting with ambition, but also off-putting, which, you know, is never a good quality in a film.
