Renegade: Matthew C. Yee Explores Asian-American Experience In New Musical
Husband and wife outlaws get into all sorts of trouble in LUCY AND CHARLIE’S HONEYMOONLookingglass Theater’s world premiere musical. It comes from the company’s artistic associate Matthew C. Yee. He wrote the book, composed the music and is starring in the production as Charlie.
The title characters, Lucy and Charlie, played by Aurora Adachi-Winter and Yee - are newlyweds who rob a gas station just as they’re about to embark on their honeymoon. The young couple has a rebellious streak, both revolting against the expectations they feel as outsiders in the United States and first generation Asian Americans.
“My show deals with racism. There are moments where we confront it in a real comedic way, and there’s a sense of catharsis that I wanted to manifest (with) those moments for myself, my cast and all Asian-Americans who might see this show.” - Matthew C. Yee talking about his approach to touching on racism in LUCY AND CHARLIE’S HONEYMOON.
LUCY AND CHARLIE’S HONEYMOON is running at Lookingglass Theatre through July 16. You can find more info at lookingglasstheatre.org
